October 11--  The City of Vidalia has invested $2 million to make the historic Pal Theater a downtown showplace and the work is almost done.

Kelvin Manning with MMI Construction is the project manager, "I'm really pleased with how the project is coming together at this stage of the game, it's really nice. It's been one of the most unique projects I've ever been involved with trying to keep the old Pal and maintain what we have to do now for the building codes, fire marshals and things like that," he said.

palballroomWhile much of the building was gutted, Manning says old timbers from the building were saved and are being used as exposed beams in the main ballroom area, "We milled it and built the beams you see exposed now.  The finished stained beams are from the original Pal in 1927."

palnickCity Manager Nick Overstreet is looking forward to completing the project by the end of November, "I really believe this community will have something it can call a real showplace.

"It's well done and we've got the right folks in here doing the job.  MMI has done a fantastic job for us and CineVision is here taking care of all the sound and lighting. It's been going on for a while now, and I understand that, but something of this magnitude has to be done right," he said.
