Mrs. Rowena Gibbs Carpenter, age 84, of Uvalda, died Sunday, May 1, 2022, at the Community Hospice House in Vidalia after an extended illness.  She was a lifelong resident of Uvalda, and was a 1956 graduate of Montgomery County High School.  She retired from The Bethany Home in Vidalia after thirty-three years as dietary manager.  She was a member of South Thompson Baptist church and was a former member of the Uvalda Baptist Church.  She enjoyed cooking, baking, flower gardening, word search puzzles, Phase 10 card game, and spending time with her grandchildren.  Preceding her death was her husband James L. Carpenter; son-in-law, Craig Crosby; parents, George Dewey Gibbs and Ennie Mell Claxton Gibbs; and sister, Ann Gibbs Hutchins.

Her family includes five children, Sue Ellen Carpenter McLemore and husband Gene, Jimmy Carpenter, all of Vidalia, Joey Carpenter, Jerry Carpenter and wife Tammy, all of Uvalda, and Judy Carpenter Crosby and Ricky Thompson of Lyons; nine grandchildren, Bill McLemore and wife Shawn of Vidalia, Jason Chambers and Missy Moore of Uvalda, Jamie Carpenter and wife Carla of Vidalia, Adam Carpenter and wife Tammy of Uvalda, Dusty Carpenter and wife Ashley of Vidalia, Lauren Lockley of Lyons, Jade Giles of Vidalia, Jordan Crosby and Stephanie Pittman of Toombs Central, and Joshua Crosby and Jessica Wimberly of Uvalda; nieces, nephews, and a special friend and caregiver, Stephanie.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00.

The funeral service will be Wednesday, May 4th, at 11:00 a.m. at South Thompson Baptist Church with Pastor BL Horne officiating.  Burial will follow at Gibbs Family Cemetery near Uvalda.

Flowers are accepted, or the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Community Hospice Foundation, PO Box 2277, Vidalia, GA 30475.

The family will assemble at the residence of a son, Jerry and Tammy Carpenter, 538 Hwy 56 East, Uvalda.
