COLUMBUS, Ga.Brewton-Parker baseball traveled to Columbus, Ga. to face No. 5-seeded Middle Georgia to open the 2022 SSAC Baseball Tournament at Historic Golden Park.

The Barons (21-28) downed the Knights (29-18-1) with a 4-1 victory as the Barons utilized two home runs to surpass Middle Georgia.

How It Happened

After a scoreless three innings to open the game, Brewton-Parker found its first hit and the first score of the contest with a solo-shot effort from Zachary Wilson that bounced off the scoreboard in left field.

Middle Georgia answered with a run of their own in the fifth inning, producing just one hit and utilizing two errors from the Barons. The Knights left two runners on base to close out the top half of the inning.

Brewton-Parker responded with an RBI triple from Taz Worrell to score Mackenzie McDowell, regaining the lead by one run. After a scoreless sixth inning, Worrell and Ethan Frasca produced base hits for the Barons with Matt Collins receiving an intentional walk to load the bases. Unfortunately, all three runners were left on base as the inning ended.

During the bottom of the eighth, BPC notched two hits and a pair of runs to jump out to a 4-1 lead. Jordan Rahn led off with a double down the left-field line while Jackson Smith followed with a two-run homer to left-center field, scoring Rahn in the process.

The Barons managed to hold on to the lead, allowing just two hits in the ninth before shutting the door on the Knights for the three-run victory to open the tournament at Historic Golden Park.

Inside the Statistics

  • Both teams produced an even six hits apiece with Worrell leading the Barons with two hits while Smith led with two RBIs.
  • As for base running, BPC left a total of nine runners on while Middle Georgia left 12.
  • Defensively, Smith produced eight putouts followed by Eduardo Castillo and Worrell with five each.
  • Ty Cook recorded the start for BPC and earned the win, tossing eight innings. He gave up five hits and just one run while striking out seven batters and walking five.
  • Austin Visocchi pitched one inning of relief and earned the save to close out the game, allowing just one hit.

Brewton-Parker now awaits the winner of top-seeded Faulkner (Ala.) and No. 8-seeded Talladega (Ala.). The Barons will face the winner tomorrow night at 7 p.m. ET. (Courtesy BPC)
