Sharpe Award

John Sharpe (L) and Vidalia Mayor Doug Roper

John Sharpe entered the Chamber of the Vidalia City Council Monday night thinking he was there to discuss and ordinance. But it was all a pretense. What he was actually there for was to be announced as the Sweet Onion City Citizen of the Month for May.

“I can’t think of anyone more deserving,” Mayor Roper said, reading off a long list of athletic and community contributions Sharpe has made to Vidalia. “You’ve done everything you do leaning on your faith-based decisions. If I had to use one word to describe what you’ve been, it’s ‘ambassador,’ because everywhere you go, you represent the City of Vidalia well.”

Sharpe, who has served as the Principal of Vidalia High School just shy of a decade, announced recently that this would be his last year at that school, but not in education as he will continue in his career at the Southeastern Early College and Career Academy (SECCA) in Vidalia.

Other accolades presented at the May meeting of the Vidalia City Council included a proclamation presented to City Clerk Amy Murray in observance of Professional City Clerks Week in Georgia, and Airport Director Billy Reagan made presentations to Fire Chief Brian Sikes and Chief of Police James Jermon in appreciation of their assistance with The Blue Angels and other aviation teams utilizing the airport during the Vidalia Onion Festival.
