On Friday night, Toombs County hosted the Battle Creek Warriors of Tattnall County at Jacky Jones Field at Booster Stadium. This homecoming game went from a defensive battle in the first half to a shootout in the second half.
Toombs County struck the scoreboard first on their opening drive going 9 plays 57 yards with a Caden Marsh Touchdown Pass to LaGonza Heyward. Angel Morales made the Score 7-0 with 4:26 left to play in the first quarter. The teams exchanged multiple possessions before Tattnall put points on the board with a 38-yard Field Goal with 11:46 remaining in the first half cutting the Dawg lead to 7-3. With 3:29 remaining in the half, Tattnall broke off a 54-yard run giving Tattnall the 10-7 lead. The Bulldogs drove down the field in the last few minutes of the half but failed to score on a 4th and goal from the 1-yard line leaving the score 10-7 with the Battle Creek Warriors in the lead at the half.
On the first drive of the second half, Toombs County drove 68 yards on 9 plays capped by an 8-yard TD scamper from Senior Tank Morris. Morales made the score 14-10. Tattnall came roaring back on their next drive. On just their 2nd play, a Warrior found the end zone on a 61-yard run giving the warriors a 17-14 lead with 7:45 left in the third quarter. Toombs quickly answered back with an 11-play, 64-yard drive that ended with Morris scoring his second rushing touchdown of the night. Morales raked on the point after making the score 21-17 Toombs. Tattnall drove back down the field but a 33-yard Field Goal attempt was blocked by Hayden Roy giving the Dawgs the ball back on their own 20. With 6:04 left in the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs would add another score on Tank Morris’ third touchdown run of the night. Wil Watts added the 2-point run to make the score 29 to 17. Tattnall would not quit and score on a very odd 65-yard TD pass on a play that one of the referees blew dead making the score 29-24. The Toombs defense would add a late safety making the score 31-23. Tattnall added another late score but missed the 2pt conversion. Toombs would hang on for the 31-29 win.
