COCHRAN, Ga. – Brewton-Parker women's basketball challenged Middle Georgia in a tough battle on Thursday night after a quick one-hour trip west to Cochran, Georgia. 

The Lady Barons (19-5, 11-4 SSAC) picked up their tenth-consecutive win of 2023 with the 79-71 victory over the Knights (7-11, 4-9 SSAC). 

“Tonight, we were in a tough fight,” Head Coach Steve Edwards said. “We had so many things go wrong tonight, yet we showed resilience and found a way to win late. Several of our players stepped up in a big way. We as a staff, are proud of our group.” 

How It Happened | 1st Q 

A jumper from Madison Evans and a trey ball from A’Aliyah Clay gave BPC an early 5-2 lead. 

The Lady Barons went on a 7-2 run to lead by eight points over the span of six minutes of play, capped off with a three-point play from Evans at the 1:59 mark. 

Middle Georgia closed out the opening quarter with three points to move the deficit to five points. 

How It Happened | 2nd Q 

The Knights leveled the score at 12-12 with 9:11 on the clock after connecting on a jumper and a three-pointer to open the second quarter. 

Brewton-Parker answered with two points from Evans and a shot from deep by Keonya Mincey to lead 17-14 with 7:59 remaining. 

Middle Georgia surged into the lead, scoring nine unanswered points to lead 23-17 while chewing three minutes off the clock. 

Brewton-Parker responded with a run of their own, outpacing the hosts 10-2 over the next couple of minutes to reclaim a two-point advantage. 

After three points from MGA, the Lady Barons wrapped up the period with an 8-3 run that saw treys drop from Cisley Copper and Clay to close the half with a 35-31 lead. 

How It Happened | 3rd Q 

Straight out of the break, Middle Georgia returned to level again by scoring four points to open the period. 

The period remained tight as both teams traded leads and leveled the game many times throughout the 10 minutes of play. 

Either team only led by more than one point once in the period until the closing seconds. 

Cisley Copper hit a trey at the 3:46 mark to give BPC a 46-43 lead while the Knights found a 53-50 lead with 30 seconds remaining before hitting a wild buzzer-beater to lead 56-52. 

How It Happened | 4th Q 

After a layup from Keyanna Tolbert to open the period, the Lady Barons utilized long buckets from Clay and Copper to surge back into control of the lead, 60-57. 

The pair of treys sparked a 16-3 streak from BPC to advance out to a 10-point advantage, leaving just over four minutes on the clock. 

Middle Georgia battled its way back to pull the deficit under double figures, but the Lady Barons remained in control of the lead to eventually close out with the 79-71 win. 

Inside The Statistics 

As a team, Brewton-Parker shot for 36.8% (25-of-68) from the floor, 33.3% (10-of-30) from three, and 65.5% (19-of-29) from the foul line. 

Evans dominated the scoring efforts for either team, scoring a season-high 31 points while snagging 10 boards for her third double-double of the season. 

Two other Lady Barons produced double-digit points with Clay etching 13 and Copper scoring 12. 

Other Notables 

Brewton-Parker controlled the boards with a 41-28 rebounding advantage. 

BPC moves to a ten-game winning streak in the new year while riding a four-game streak over the Knights. 

Next Up 

The Lady Barons will take a few days off from play before returning to the court next Saturday against Life (Ga.) in Gillis Gym for Homecoming Weekend as well as Senior Day.
