A nine-year investigation into the death of a Toombs County man has hit another roadblock, but law enforcement isn’t ready to stop trying to find the person or persons responsible for the murder.

Last Wednesday on Newsbreak we reported that it had been 9 years since the unsolved death of Chris Wiggins at the Santa Claus Minit Mart, noting that the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office was still actively investigating the case along with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. This past Friday morning, Capt. Jordan Kight reported that he had just received an email from a GBI supervisor informing him  that the DNA sample that had been submitted to the GBI Crime lab did not have enough DNA present to test it  at its lab.

Both the Sheriff’s Office and the GBI jointly agreed to explore the option of sending the sample to a private company that has more capabilities to test the DNA sample than the state crime lab has.

Capt. Kight said after determining their options a decision will be made on how and if the agencies will proceed going forward.

Wiggins was shot and killed in the late hours of Sunday, June 8, 2014. The Sheriff’s Office and GBI have continued to follow up on any new leads they have received and will continue to do so. There is a substantial reward set aside by the Toombs Montgomery Crime Stoppers for information that leads to an arrest and conviction of those responsible in the unsolved murder of Chris Wiggins. Tips can be made by calling the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office at 912-526-6778 or toll free to the GBI tipline at 1-800-597-8477.
