Original press release.

Dublin, Georgia (September 7, 2023) – The GBI is investigating the death of Shamiruna Coney, 16, of Dublin, GA. On Wednesday, September 6, 2023, at about 7:50 a.m., the Dublin Police Department requested the GBI to investigate.

The investigation indicates that on September 6, 2023, at about 7:30 a.m., Coney went to a home on Woodlawn Street in Dublin.  When she arrived, she was shot by someone inside the home.  When police arrived, they found Coney outside of the home suffering from gunshot wounds.  Coney was taken to a local hospital where she died.

Agents questioned the shooter and learned that he thought a home invasion was happening and fired shots to protect himself.  It was later that the shooter realized the victim was someone he knew.

At this time, police have made no arrests. The GBI investigation is active and ongoing.  When the investigation is done, the case will be given to the Dublin District Attorney’s Office for next steps.

Anyone with information about this investigation is asked to contact the GBI regional investigative office in Eastman at 478-374-6988 or the Dublin Police Department at 478-277-5023. Anonymous tips can also be submitted by calling 1-800-597-TIPS (8477), online at https://gbi.georgia.gov/submit-tips-online, or by downloading the See Something, Send Something mobile app.
